Help w/ really good / unique / interesting regional beer as a gift

My brother-in-law, who lives in SoCal, is obsessed with craft beer. He travels to breweries all over the world, bids on rare bottles and ltd. editions through various auctions, and he even brewed his own barrel-aged sour blonde ale that recently won first place in some contest and got bottled and distributed by Breurry Terreux, I think. Anyhow, all that to say, he likes beer!

I want to pick up some bottles for him in Montreal as a holiday gift. I'm really more into wine and liquor however, and what little I know of regional beer, would not be the sort of thing that I'd want to bother with, as I'd really like to spring for something special. I'd love to hear from other beer enthusiasts who might have suggestions to offer. As far as I know, he's into strong and distinct ales with interesting and complex flavors. I don't think he's into ciders. I'd like to find something innovative or unusual that he most likely wouldn't have tasted before. It doesn't necessarily *have* to be Canadian, but it has to be accessible in or around Montreal (I'll be up in the Laurentians and further north around Tremblant for a week over NYE) and something NOT easily accessible in SoCal and NOT from one of the fashionable and big hyped breweries Stateside; unless it's a rare/vintage bottle or something of that nature. Hopefully you get the idea.

I'll spend up to $150 on anything from crates to a single exceptional bottle to several or more. What would be among your top recommendations?
