best/most authentic tomato pie in NY/NJ/PA?

I'd love to know the history of the tomato pie, and places to find authentic/great pies.
I've read about Alfred's, Marchiano's, Downstairs at Bellevue, Marucas, and Papa's. And I've been to DeLorenzo's (delicious, obviously, which is why I am searching for more). I'm guessing the tomato pie business is bigger than I realize. yes? no?
am I correct that a true tomato pie is one without cheese, or with cheese below the sauce?
is Trenton the birthplace and everything else an offshoot?
