Sadly, the California abalone population is so endangered that the San Francisco fishery has been closed since 2007—and as of this year, recreational diving for the prized mollusks, which has been a local tradition for generations, is completely banned along the North coast of the state. While waiting (hopefully) for the numbers to recover, you may be able to find farmed abalone on local menus.
