The Real San Francisco Treat(s)

"Steam" was once a catchall nickname for any beer brewed on the West Coast without refrigeration, possibly because the cool, foggy night air made steam rise from the warm shallow pans of fermenting beer that were left open to the elements on San Francisco rooftops. Modern Anchor Steam beer is craft-brewed (in very different conditions) in the city, but its name hearkens back to Gold Rush tradition.
