Despite what a certain catchy TV jingle has long proclaimed, Rice-A-Roni is not in fact the definitive San Francisco treat. It was invented there, true, but the city has also spawned many other delicious dishes that are now enjoyed far and wide, and keeps a few more local food traditions going too.

Naturally, there are scores of modern-day classics you should seek out in the Golden City, like Bi-Rite Creamery's luscious ice cream, Trouble's toast, Zuni Cafe's chicken and bread salad, and Charles Phan's restaurants in general, just to name a few.
