The Ear Inn is New York City’s oldest bar continuously serving alcohol since 1817. “Even prohibition didn’t stop us,” the restaurant’s website declares. The bar is in the James Brown House, an official NYC landmark. To avoid the Landmark Commission’s intense review of new signage, the current owners blacked out the round parts of the B on the BAR sign, and a name was born.
