Though opinion is divided, some love the new Pizzeria il Fico, which has taken over the old Michel Richard space. It’s pleasantly surprising, says omotosando.

The wine list is the first eye-opener, says omotosando: small, moderately priced, and mostly Italian. omotosando had an $8 quartino of 2009 Farnese Rosato Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Cerasuolo, an Italian rosé. “I don’t think you can find a better moderately priced wine at any restaurant in Los Angeles,” says omotosando. “This was just a very lovely wine for the price, unlike the garbage you will find at most restaurants in this wine price range.” omotosando got to chat with the owner about the wine list. “He said he picked it all out himself and only chose wines that he himself would drink.”

omotosando also got to try a glass of the most expensive bottle on the menu, a Tenuta San Guido ($90). “It was absolutely wonderful—perfectly balanced with soft tannins and a nice mouthfeel,” says omotosando. “I usually bring my own wines to restaurants because the wines are either awful or exorbitantly priced, but this is one restaurant where I won’t be bringing my own wine—I’ll just order a bottle of the Tenuta San Guido.”

The pizzas are very nice, says omotosando, with great crust. A mozzarella, sautéed shrimp, zucchini, and arugula pie comes out with perfectly cooked shrimp and well-melded flavors. “I could be in heaven every night with just a slice of this pizza and a glass of the Tenuta San Guido.”

baloney disagrees, disliking the pizza’s overwhelming flavors and overly thin crust. “Honestly, I don’t see the necessity of the wood oven if they make pizza like this. If you are a fan of cracker-like pizza crust, yes, you will probably like their version.”
