We love to see member recipes popping up high in our traffic stats, and we always check them out. When we made this Best Banana Bread recipe by djthomas, reactions were universally good: The bread was moist, banana-y, and really easy to put together. We could see how Thomas’s suggestion to add chocolate chips and walnuts would be great.
I chatted with Deb Thomas about what makes the recipe so special. This banana bread is sadly one of the only existing recipes from her grandmother, who was a multiple blue-ribbon winner at the local state fairs and baking contests. Deb’s grandmother got it from her mother, which puts its origin around the turn of the century (that’s 1899, not 1999). This recipe still has some remnants of the old-timey style, calling for ingredients like “sour milk.” Over the years it has been updated and tweaked for modern baking methods by three generations of Deb’s family.
Deb admits that she bakes this bread so often not only because her family, friends, and neighbors love it, but also because she always ends up with bananas that need using up.
