You might associate packaged fried onions only with the dreaded Thanksgiving green bean casserole, but hounds think they’re a dandy ingredient, adding crunch and flavor to a variety of dishes. Folks also note that in Asian and Indian markets, you can buy bags or jars of fried onions for much less than the cost of American supermarket brands.
Several hounds crush the onions and use the crumbs to coat chicken or pork chops before baking. Use them in place of buttered breadcrumbs on macaroni and cheese, or mixed with cheese to top creamy casseroles or oven-baked mashed potatoes. They’re good on soup or salad in place of croutons, or stirred into a dip. Or go really unconventional: “Absolutely outstanding mashed into a batch of salt caramel ice cream,” says HillJ.
