The brownies are crazy-wonderful at Sweets for the Soul, run by a friendly and helpful lady. “I love that she has taken no shortcuts to produce a fine product,” says liu. It costs about $3 for just a few bites of brownie, but “every bite is heavenly.” The owner’s generous with her tastings, too: All the various brownie types are lined up on the counter, fresh and labeled.

shebop’s favorite is the Hot Shot brownie, with Valrhona chocolate, chile, cardamom, and ginger. sel’s favorite is the spicier Hotter Shot.

liu doesn’t like brownie add-ins, but Sweets for the Soul’s classic flourless brownie is “very, very delicious. The ingredients are serious. … This is a wonderful place and the owner is presenting an honest product,” says liu.

The salted caramel ice cream is almost as good as the one at San Francisco’s beloved Bi-Rite Creamery, says sel, who got to try an experimental ice cream sandwich with salted caramel ice cream, as well as freshly baked chocolate cookies.
