Larry J’s House of Q in Chelsea, says SuzieCK, is a “terrific place where the brisket is fatty (trimmed if you want) and deliciously smoky all the way through. Sauce on the side, of course. Oh my.” Pulled pork is “hot but not too hot,” and the collards are “vinegary and satisfying.” If collards aren’t your thing, the sweet potatoes are soft but not mushy, and laced with warm spices.
Housed in a former car dealership, Larry J’s has held on to all the glass and the high ceilings, a nice touch. There’s butcher paper on the tables, vintage soul music on the stereo, and a blackboard at child height to give kids something to do while adults are chomping and yakking.
“You forgot to mention the fried pickles,” prods galangatron. “Ooooo,” swooned Suzie. “Those fried pickles were great. Plenty of heat, good dipping sauce, nice crunch, and then that tangy vinegar jolt that gets you right in the back of your jaws.” Sign us up.
