There’s a surprise hiding in the basement of Waltham India Market, the giant Indian grocery store on Moody Street: New Apna Bazaar, a food court area with food stands (just two so far), as well as a sit-down restaurant, Kabab & Tandoor (which used to be on Main Street).
First, the restaurant scouted by LStaff last week on a lunch-buffet foray: The food is the same as at Main Street, minus their usual red chicken dish but plus tandoori chicken with a “really good peppery rub.” The naan is no longer Afghan but more like the usual Indian naan. LStaff also tried a garlicky potato and spinach dish that was “outstanding.” The space is a little dark, but it has new tables, booths, and chairs.
catspercapita poked into the food stands and found Desi fried chicken and an Indian/Middle Eastern joint peddling absolutely terrific sandwiches for $5. Falafel was perfectly cooked and light; a chicken shawarma wrap was also tasty. The same stand sells tandoori, dosas, uttapam, and kebabs.
