Even before the grand reopening of Minetta Tavern, the new French reincarnation of an old-school Italian hangout, much of the buzz focused on its Black Label burger. This would be no ordinary hamburger, we were promised, but a masterpiece in meat, made with a secret blend of beef from the elite purveyor Pat La Frieda.

Now that the place is open, it appears the Black Label lives up to its advance billing. “This is one burger that does not need any condiments,” declares raw60, who describes a deeply beefy, agreeably musty flavor from the mix of Kentucky brisket, skirt steak, and dry-aged rib-eye. sam1 finds it “fantastic” and well worth the $26 price tag. It comes with caramelized onions on a sesame-sprinkled brioche from sister restaurant Balthazar, with a heap of excellent fries on the side.

Business has been brisk, but not everyone is lining up for that burger. “I will buy a $26 hamburger right after I book my next vacation to Venus,” resolves Bob Martinez.
