Hibiscus flower, most commonly seen stateside in iced tea and Mexican agua fresca, now shows promise as the next national health craze. A new hibiscus drink called Ooba has hit the shelves with claims of being heart-healthy and high in antioxidants.
Ooba comes in three flavors: straight-up hibiscus, hibiscus and orange, and hibiscus and lime. The lime flavor has the citric acid flavor of 7UP, and is not really limey at all, but the hibiscus and hibiscus and orange are sweet and tangy with a nice effervescence. Each drink only has 90 calories but in an effort to be a little more health conscious with my health drink, I like to spike some club soda with a little bit of Ooba: even fewer calories and still tasty.
