Targeted as high in fat, sugar, and salt—and famously inedible to just about anyone not originally from Australia—Vegemite has found itself in the crosshairs of a preventative health task force, writes the Independent.

Granted that there is much hand-flapping about an as-of-yet unpublished report that’s a long way from a government ban or tax. But it’s a symbol of how seriously Australians take their crazy salt/yeast-extract spread that even quiet rumblings of official discontent have thrown folks into a tizzy. The opposition health spokesman demanded that the “nanny-state government” clarify its intentions, saying that Australian families “don’t need to be served up a menu … about what they need to eat and drink.”
