“Y’know, there’s a big crime syndicate in Colombia. So when they say there’s a little bit of Juan Valdez in every can, maybe they’re not kidding.”

That’s the arguably not-very-wise words from a recent Mother Goose and Grimm strip that has made the strip’s creator the target of a $20 million suit to be filed by the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation.

Twenty million dollars is, of course, a bit steep for a joke about coffee, but the strip is published by more than 800 papers in the U.S. and around the world, so it has a surprisingly long reach.

Forget Texas. A much wiser slogan would be Don’t Mess With Colombian Coffee … or, really, anything Colombian, as long as we’re prioritizing what not to mess with.
