Are dragonfruit tasteless? JenBoes recently tried one from a grocery store in Kauai, and while it was “refreshing—a great treat for a hot day,” it didn’t seem to have a very strong flavor.

rworange likes dragonfruit—on its own, in a salad, or in a drink, white or pink—but finds that quality varies a great deal depending on the source. “Be careful about buying dragonfruit,” she says. Her vendor grows them locally, and they are wonderful. “But the ones from places like Trader Joe’s and even one of the best produce markets are pretty tasteless,” says rworange. “They are usually imported from Mexico. Look for a shiny skin and the skin should be thin. If they have a dull looking skin, skip.”
