It’s Christmas in August for lovers of Burmese food, who flock each summer to the Fun Fair at Myanmar Baptist Church in Queens. This mellow afternoon gathering is, among other things, a showcase for talented home cooks who dish up Burmese specialties that are usually impossible to find around New York. The 2008 fair takes place this Saturday, August 16, from noon to 6 p.m.
Highlights of last year’s fair included fish noodle soup; spicy tofu salad; and rice noodles with tuna sauce, bamboo, and cilantro. And there are ample rewards beyond the chow. As Polecat wrote last summer, “The home cooking, the music (mostly Burmese pop, with the exception of a heartfelt rendition of ‘Have You Ever Seen the Rain’), the warm, friendly atmosphere, it was all happening.”
