One of the cool things about the Internet is the way it has revived photographic journalism of the sort Life magazine used to excel in. Wired magazine’s website has taken to featuring photo contests, and this week the subject was food. There are two features up: the top 10 reader photos as decided by readers, and a different top 10 chosen by’s photo department. The 20 pictures take viewers on an international tour of haute and low cuisines, from Froot Loops to infused vodka. Some of the photos are cinematically atmospheric, while others focus on everyday minutiae.

Next week’s photo contest theme is blue, but that’s no reason not to continue with the food entries.
