The newest contender in a crowded field of frozen desserts, Simply Peeled, is a lightweight, says Frederick Loren—and he means that in the nicest way. This uptown shop, which opened last week, purées fresh fruit, sweetens it with cane sugar, and swirls it frozen-yogurt style from a soft-serve machine.

The result is refreshing and surprising. The flavor is naturally fruity, as you’d guess, but the texture is unexpectedly creamy for a dairy-free dessert. Frederick enjoyed banana topped with carob chips. The other flavors are mango and strawberry, and apple is coming in fall. The 20-odd toppings include granola, berries and other fruit, maple syrup, and peanut butter sauce. A four-ounce serving is around 100 calories—just the thing, says Frederick, after “a full summer of gorging on burgers and ice cream and lobster rolls.”
