Doughnut Orgy at the Ferry Building

"I'm not sure what possessed me," writes CarrieWas218 after a binge on organic, vegan doughnuts at the Pepples Donuts kiosk at the Ferry Building that netted 16 cake doughnuts—and a lot of new friends.

After the orgy was over, one doughnut ruled them all: the kaffir lime leaf with coconut. "It is a combination of exotic flavors without being bizarre or gimmicky," CarrieWas218 says. "It was one of the most exciting doughnuts I have experienced since I started documenting my love of fried dough. This is a Hall of Fame doughnut." In addition, the coconut whiteout has big, rich coconut flavor, and the orange Creamsicle is "delightfully tangy." Of the chocolate variations, the one with chocolate icing is the way to go, in CarrieWas218's opinion.

In the "interesting but not awesome" category fall the overly subtle blueberry and coffee doughnuts and salted caramel, which didn't really taste of anything other than sweetness. If you're the adventuresome sort, Far West candy cap, from the Ferry Building mushroom purveyor, is earthy but has an appealing maplelike quality. But it suffers from a problem that afflicted other not-so-successful flavors: "Frankly, the aroma of the cakes was that of uncooked batter and in several cases, the predominant TASTE hinted at rawness," CarrieWas218 says.
