The Park opened quietly in Echo Park, in the space that was formerly El Autentico, and things are looking—and tasting—good, says bethshax.
To start, corn cakes arrive fresh off the grill, with superfresh shrimp and a tangy, flavorful sauce. New England clam chowder is pretty traditional (the chef is from Boston), except for the cilantro.
Jidori chicken doesn’t need any kind of flavor boost—it’s juicy and delicious. Fries come with a garlicky aioli. Veggie burger is a world away from the frozen stuff; with a few tweaks to the menu, vegetarians could do well here.
There’s also hanger steak, salmon with black bean sauce, some basic pastas, salads (beet salad is excellent), and a regular burger. For dessert, apple crisp and butterscotch tart are top-notch.
The most expensive thing on the menu is $15 or $16, and there’s no corkage.
The only issue is the décor; it looks like the owners weren’t sure what to do with the cavernous space. Unfortunately, they did eliminate El Autentico’s rain forest bathroom!
Unlike other vegan restaurants in and around Echo Park, Tantawan’s food actually has flavor, say those who’ve tried it.
Orange chicken, spicy eggplant, wonton soup, and garlic pepper with your choice of fake meat are all pretty good. Lunchtime brings $7 specials including a roll, salad, and brown rice with your entrée.
