Art festivals are a dime a dozen—and art and wine festivals are numerous as well (because a little tipple can only get you closer to plunking down for that big oil abstract you’ve always wanted). Now, here comes the Umami Festival, a food and art festival—and we’re not just talking about a few food booths to the side of the art displays. Here the two genres merge.
I’m still trying to get my head around the whole thing, but here’s an example: The festival opens with the creation of an Orphic Memory Sausage—attendees are encouraged to bring items to contribute that evoke “a memory of place or time or experience.” These items will then be chopped up, stuffed into sausage casing, hung to dry (or perhaps even smoked), and everyone will get to take a slice of it home at the end of the event.
Fascinating? Ridiculous? Only time will tell. The festival runs April 8-18 in New York. If anyone goes, bring us back a slice of memory sausage, will ya?
