Sam Bompas, of Bompas & Parr, introduced the jam at a surrealist art show at the Barbican Art Gallery in London, next to pieces of art from Dali, Duchamp, Giacometti, and Magritte, reported the AP. Bompas & Parr, according to its website, “designs spectacular food experiences often working on an architectural scale with cutting edge technology [which] explore how the taste of food is altered through synaesthesia, performance, and setting.”
The jam reportedly tastes like condensed milk, though it’s made with gin and, um, hair. Bompas & Parr is famous for fusing food and art in such mind-provoking exhibits as a glowing jelly installation at the San Francisco MOMA in 2009 and an enormous punch bowl of Courvoisier punch which people rowed through in 2009 in London—Willy Wonka for adults!
In an interview delving into the thought process behind Occult Jam, Bompas said simply, “The most mundane food of all is jam. So we made it a surreal object.”
We thought the most mundane food was the saltine. Sam, combine a saltine with Michael Jackson’s essence—a moonwalking cracker? Just sayin’, so maybe we’ll throw some big surrealist bucks across the pond.
