Is there some kind of sporting tournament happening this month? We only ask because it was apparently the inspiration for a far more fascinating elimination-style competition: the National IPA Championship.

IPA in this case doesn’t stand for the International Phonetic Alphabet, isopropyl alcohol, or the Intergovernmental Personnel Act. Instead, it stands for India Pale Ale, a hoppy, citrusy, bitter beer style that is currently at the top of the charts for craft-beer enthusiasts (but is sadly endangered by a worldwide hops shortage).

The championships wrapped up last weekend, with California’s Green Flash Brewing taking the honors—no surprise, since it produces one hopped-out brew. For color commentary on the three-week festivities, refer to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s reader beer blog, which closely followed the action.
