Eat a whale, save the planet: That’s the message of a new study commissioned by Norway, which also happens to be, along with Iceland and Japan, among the last whale-hunting countries. By measuring the fuel use of whaling boats, the carbon footprint of whaling was determined to be far smaller than raising livestock, bringing a Norwegian official to this conclusion: “Basically it turns out that the best thing you can do for the planet is to eat whale meat compared to other types of meat.”
Totally! And lion meat, too! As Greenpeace writes on its blog—of course Greenpeace has a blog—it is “hard to know whether to pity or admire an opponent when they’re up against a wall and start throwing out the desperation arguments.” After all, Norway, which hunts the small minke whale, hasn’t even been able to meet its own whaling quotas for the last couple of years.
