There is a big difference between rolled oats and steel-cut oats, says digkv. Steel-cut oats “are delicious and nutty and have texture. They are what oatmeal is all about.” Once you’re used to the steel-cut variety, rolled oats “begin to resemble library paste.”

wawajb, however, says, “Sometimes you just want that ‘library paste’ texture with all the great childhood associations.” wawajb adds fruit to rolled oats and says that “steel cut oats kinda remind me of grape nuts cereal after they’ve soaked in milk for long enough to lose most of their crunch. But a little chewier.”
