As a server at a casual-dining restaurant in my early 20s, I was issued a wine key that looked as if it predated the Civil War. With its dull blade, short worm, and shoddy lever device, I’m amazed I was able to open any bottles successfully. Many years later, I still am fond of a waiter’s-style wine key, but have since upgraded to the Wine Enthusiast version. The big differences: a knife that can slice foil instantly, an elongated Teflon-coated worm, and a double-hinged lever that can liberate the most obstinate corks (including the plastic variety) almost as quickly as the wine inside can flow!
