You know those appealing little breath-freshening mixes that you take from a dish as you leave an Indian restaurant? They’re called mukhwas, says shahkbhaji, which translates unsurprisingly to something like breath freshener. Sugar-coated fennel seeds, by themselves, are one of the most popular mukhwas at restaurants. There are others: savory mukhwas that include the insides of coriander seeds (dhana ni dal), addictive mukhwas like betel nut and tobacco, and regional mukhwas like toasted oregano seeds, sesame seeds, and salt.

The breath-freshening mukhwas are available at Indian grocery stores. You’ll have to go to India for the betel nut and tobacco variety, though.
