Eating local in New York City is super-duper simple. I mean, look at this map of all the farms in Manhattan.
Whoops! That’s actually a map of everyone in Manhattan receiving farm subsidy payments. It was put together by the Environmental Working Group, which assembled an exhaustively comprehensive subsidy database earlier this year. The map recently made the rounds of the political blogosphere, and it turns out that Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns has been touring the country with the EWG’s Manhattan map, using it as a prop to sell changes in the subsidy program.
Just in case that map’s been torn or stained in its travels, this week the EWG helpfully posted farm subsidy maps of Atlanta, Washington DC, Los Angeles, Miami Beach, and San Francisco. (It must have been a recipient in Miami Beach who asked this question, right?)
