Croutons made on the stovetop with butter (or olive oil) are superior to those made in the oven, says damadchef. Melt butter or heat olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat, add cubed stale bread, and then add a bit more butter or oil to fully coat the bread, tossing the croutons until they’re golden brown. Season with salt, pepper, and the herbs or spices of your choice, and turn out onto paper towels to absorb any extra grease.
