Chinatown’s Phoenix Bakery has been family owned and operated since 1938, and according to local Chowhounds the shop is still producing one of the city’s best and more well-known desserts: a strawberry whipped cream cake that’s light, ever so slightly sweet, and definitely nostalgic.
“One of my old favorites,” says latindancer, who visited the bakery on Broadway recently to pick up a celebratory cake. “The service is wonderful, and that cake…wow.” The traditional version consists of layers of sponge cake, fresh whipped cream, and sliced berries frosted with additional whipped cream and edged with almond slices (pictured). “I’ve been going there for over 20 years,” shares chewbacca, who hasn’t found a comparable slice anywhere in town. Most whole cakes require an advance order, but they always have plenty of their signature cake in the case for same-day pickup.
