With month-old Stella 34, Macy’s Manhattan flagship store is taking its dining options to another level—the sixth floor, where a once-hidden storage area has been opened up into an airy, 260-seat Italian restaurant with views of the Empire State Building. The menu—developed with help from Lincoln‘s Jonathan Benno and overseen by Italian-trained Executive Chef Jarett Appell—is also a step up from those at Macy’s food court and basement bar and grill. It highlights dishes from three wood-fired ovens, including baked branzino and pork chops and pizzas with novel toppings like cauliflower and Meyer lemon (pictured).

The restaurant includes a takeout counter for sandwiches, salads, and espresso drinks and a gelato stand run by Vivoli, a dessert destination in Florence. Early word on Chowhound is promising. Will4Food calls Stella 34 “a fashionable and stunning restaurant with terrific food” and adds that the gelato is “the best I’ve tasted in NYC.”
