A shot of booze can turn a good bread pudding into a great one. That might just be the difference at La Boite en Bois, a French hideaway on the Upper West Side whose version comes with vanilla-bourbon sauce. “Decadent and dense,” arepo says on Chowhound, “the best doggone apple cinnamon bread pudding ever made.”

Restaurant Marc Forgione has also been known to hit the sauce, serving its banana bread pudding (pictured) with Jameson ice cream. MrGrumpy, for one, is a fan.

Ice cream also takes the lead at sister restaurants Blue Ribbon Bakery Kitchen and Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya—a luscious vanilla at the former, a deeply spicy ginger at the latter, which won over even bread pudding skeptic Miss Needle.

Another non-bread-pudding-lover, djquinnc, admits to being converted by Annisa‘s variation with poppy seeds and Meyer lemon curd.

Finally, hounds share two sleeper picks: a tasty, custardy bread pudding at Westside Restaurant, a little-discussed uptown diner, and a great chocolaty one at Theater District tourist magnet Carmine’s. “Tiny bit too much cinnamon, maybe,” gavspen allows, “but good nonetheless.”
