Arkansas Black is a 19th-century apple varietal with crisp, tart flesh and a dark skin that gets darker the longer it’s stored. That’s what many of its admirers do, since Arkansas Blacks can keep for up to six months after picking.

This discussion from 2011 reads like a love letter to the heirloom apple. Now’s the time to find them—Chowhound mdougherty recently found the first of the season at the Jack London Square Farmers’ Market, where Joe Stabile of Hillview Farm is a favorite for heirloom apples.
