Don’t let Don Felix’s liquor store and meat market signs scare you: To the right of the meat counter is a newly renovated restaurant space. According to LA hound PaulF, this unassuming taqueria is serving up some tasty, ready-to-eat Oaxacan food that rivals any in nearby eateries.
The dishes are so impressive that PaulF and family went two nights in a row and sampled a wide range of menu items. Meat entrées are consistently flavorful and juicy. The plata de costillitas (grilled short ribs) are Korean-style thin, more spicy than sweet; the costillas de puerco (fried pork short ribs) had tremendous flavor, covered with a tasty sauce whose heat “did not overwhelm, but rather snuck up on you.” Made with freshly house-made tortillas, the tacos and burritos are great, too.
Keep in mind that this shop was run by different proprietors about two years back. If you dismissed the restaurant then, be sure to give it a try now that it’s had a face-lift and is run by talented owners.
