Sable’s is often overlooked in conversations about Manhattan’s best smoked fish, but uptown Chowhounds say that’s just wrong. ellenost ranks its sable ahead of that at perennial downtown favorite Russ & Daughters and its whitefish just about even. porkpa thinks Sable’s whole lineup—nova, sturgeon, sable, etc.—is the equal of that at R&D and fellow hound haunts Barney Greengrass, Murray’s Sturgeon Shop, and Zabar’s (Sable’s owner was once the head fish cutter there). Beyond straight smoked fish, hounds love the prepared foods, like tuna salad and an irresistible lobster salad. “Love that they offer a taste as soon as you are near the counter,” ellenost says.
