West of Pecos is part of the wave of new restaurants breaking in the Mission’s Valencia corridor. Joan Kureczka says this “modern take on Tex-Mex” combines thoughtful touches with well-executed dishes, and isn’t a bad value to boot. The “delicious and creamy” queso dip included Jack, cheddar, green chiles, and chorizo, Joan Kureczka says, noting that only the duck flautas failed, thanks to thick, hard tortillas and dry meat.
Her favorite dish was the pumpkin seed “Caesar” salad, with creamy garlic dressing, Cotija cheese, roasted plum tomatoes, and the namesake seeds intermingling with a pile of crunchy romaine. A lime wedge dipped in coarsely ground chile added citrusy brightness and a kick of heat.
