Shanghai No. 1 Seafood Village is starting to hit on all cylinders, even on dishes other than dim sum. Porthos ranked it very good overall, with a couple of truly excellent hits, including sheng jian bao (pan-fried buns).

Shanghai No. 1’s version have a “nice crispy browned bottom with plenty of juice in the bun,” says Porthos. They blow away the rest of the Los Angeles competition—the only better ones Porthos has had were in Shanghai. The xiao long bao (juicy dumplings) are also excellent.

Lion’s head pork meatballs in clear broth are outstanding, too. The meatballs are amazingly tender, probably because the meat’s been chopped by hand, not put through a grinder.
