Woodside, Queens, no hotbed of Slavic cooking, has a new Polish deli that’s worth checking out. Justpaula says she’s sold on Bursztynek Deli’s stuffed cabbage (and adds that you may have to ask for the sauce that goes with it). It’s part of a lineup of prepared foods that also includes soups, fried pork cutlets, and other hearty takeout fare. Among the baked goods, try the apple cake, sold by the pound.
This tidy little shop also lays out a large selection of cheeses, hams, and kielbasas, including hunter’s sausage (myśliwska) and wedding sausage (weselna). Justpaula sampled a few sausages and some packaged pierogi (made by W.H. Foods in Greenpoint) and found it all quite tasty. “The walls are lined with what may be every single packaged product made in Poland (and perhaps a few other Eastern European countries),” Justpaula says. “For those people that live near these parts and don’t have a place for Polish goodies closer than Greenpoint or Middle Village/Maspeth, you may want to check it out.”
