So what’s an Eccles cake, anyway? North End Grill‘s Battery Park City customers must’ve been scratching their heads over this too, because the newly rewritten dessert menu has rechristened it “currant and almond puff pie with Montgomery cheddar.” Call it what you will—North End Grill’s version of this English sweet, named for the northern town that made it famous, is world-class. “I grew up in the UK,” says Wilfrid, “and this is far and away the best Eccles cake I’ve ever tasted.”
The Eccles cake has also turned up at The John Dory Oyster Bar, which pairs it with Stilton. loratliff pronounces it the best she’s had on this side of the pond. “The chef’s treacle pudding is to die for too,” she adds.
