It happens to be one of a growing category of Easter egg–colored liqueurs celebrated by hip-hop and R&B stars (Tupac, Kelly Rowland). X-Rated and its better-known brethren Hpnotiq and Alizé are marketed as clubbin’ drinks that mix with anything. They’re fruity, sweet, and—just in time for Valentine’s Day—pornishly named (one of the newest, which we were unable to find at our local BevMo!, is called OR-G).
Intrigued, CHOW.com staff recently tasted a handful of these sex liqueurs, mixed with Absolut and shaken with ice. Here are our tasting notes, along with a sexiness rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the sexiest.
X-Rated Fusion Liqueur
What it is: a pinkish-red drink that’s a “sensuous blend of ultra-premium French vodka and rich blood oranges, mingling with mangos and passion fruit.” What it tastes like: coconut sunscreen with a finish of aspartame. Sexiness level: 1.
Alizé Wild Passion
What it is: a Hawaiian punch–colored release from Alizé (originally popularized by Tupac in his video for “Thug Passion“). It’s a “blend of fine French cognac, passion fruit, mango and pink grapefruit.” What it tastes like: peach, with an aftertaste of cheap leather. Sexiness level: 2.
What it is: a bilious-blue “refreshing blend of premium French vodka, exotic fruit juices, and a touch of Cognac.” What it tastes like: nose of cat pee, with notes of Febreze. Sexiness level: 2.
What it is: A new release from Hpnotiq (and endorsed by Kelly Rowland), this purple drink is “a refreshing blend of premium French vodka, infused natural fruits, flowers and a touch of Cognac.” What it tastes like: grape Dimetapp with a hint of lavender. Sexiness level: 3.
Qream, Peach Flavor
What it is: a pink crème liqueur (it also comes in strawberry) from Diageo, in partnership with rapper/producer/fashion designer Pharrell Williams. What it tastes like: The staff favorite and only creamy one of the bunch, it was “reminiscent of horchata” or an “Asian yogurt drink.” Sexiness level: 7.
Here’s the X-Rated recipe, by the way, from Watch! magazine, in case you’d like to give it a go.
