Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1 cup + 1 tablespoon chocolate chips, divided
  • ¾ cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 F
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add the butter cubes to the flour mixture and mix by criss-crossing 2 knives or by breaking down the butter cubes with your hands until crumbs have formed.
  5. Add the chocolate chips and stir lightly.
  6. In a small bowl combine the buttermilk and vanilla.
  7. Pour the buttermilk mixture into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a floured surface and form the dough into an 8-inch circle about ¾-inch thick.
  9. Cut the disc in half, then half again, then half again, so you have 8 scones.
  10. Place them on the prepared baking sheet, press in the remaining chocolate chips, and freeze for 10 minutes.
  11. Remove the scones from the freezer and bake them for 12 minutes.
  12. While they are baking make the glaze. Add the powdered sugar to a small bowl and whisk in the lemon juice and vanilla until the glaze is smooth and thick but pourable.
  13. Cool the scones on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes
  14. Drizzle the glaze over cooled scones and let it set for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
