If by South Brooklyn you mean the Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens/Red Hook (the old name for the nabe), I would get an italian ice ($1.25) at Court Pastry on Court Street and then I would head west to Henry Street and order a rice ball (with sauce on the side) and regular slice at Nino's ($3.75-ish).

By South Brooklyn, I actually meant a huge area also encompassing Fort Greene/Clinton Hill as well as Chinatown and Sunset Park. Maybe I should just say all of Brooklyn except for Williamsburg/Greenpoint and other areas that are a pain in the but to get to by train from Fort Greene.

Soup dumplings ($3.50) to go at Chance (though not the best in the city, credible for the area) and a cookie from one of the nearby bakeries
Two tacos from Fast and Fresh deli
One slice of Red Velvet Cake from CakeMan Raven ($5, no nuts for me)
Whole seedless watermelon from Pathmark ($4.99 special this week)

They're both in Carroll Gardens, addresses on Citysearch.
I should add $5 of anything (maybe 1/2lb of superfresh mozzarella and a loaf of ciabatta) from Caputo's to my list.

Also see the Dumpling thread, just above this one. The one on 48th St. has the pork ones at 8-10 for $2 and other items are similarly priced. I haven't been to the others mentioned, but I'm pretty sure that they fall in the same price range.

Peas Pulao $.95, an order of Samosas $1.95, and an order of Tikiyas $1.95 from Kinara on 5th ave in the Slope. Half price for everything on the menu for lunch. Delicious!

I see I'm a little late to this thread, but I had to chip in my two cents (or, in this case, five bucks... sorry...):
The amazingly as-yet-undiscovered Eclipse in Sunset Park (4th Ave at 43rd St) has, on the weekends, the most phenomenal breakfast sandwiches I've ever tasted ($4.00, I believe, with bacon or ham, $3.00 without).
In addition to the regular bacon-egg-cheese combo, they throw on shredded lettuce, beans, avocado (!) and onions. Maybe tomato as well, I'm not sure. In any case, they're highly recommended for sandwich lovers -- I haven't been to Thanh Da once since I discovered them.
