Delivery in the JTM/Little Italy area

I live on Mozart Ouest X St Laurent and am wondering about delivery. I spent a couple of years in the McGill ghetto and have realized that where I am now is considered too far out for any of my old places to deliver, and with a new baby in the house we're not getting out much these days. Does anyone have any recommendations for this area? Indian and Asian (any type) are my favourites, but really I'm open to anything as long as it isn't the usual pizza/poutine/student-y stuff.

  1. Most of the South Asian places near there are in Parc-Extension. It is very close, just over the railway viaduct (Loblaws and westwards). I know some places deliver, but I never order in, so you might want to take a quick walk over there along Jean-Talon W to see which ones do.

I'm assuming that by "Asian" you mean East and Southeast Asian - once again there are several small Vietnamese places that do deliver but I couldn't tell you which ones do. Usually they put circulars in people's letterboxes. And a lot of places in northern Plateau and Mile-End do deliver in our parts with no supplement (Terrasse Lafayette is one) - it really isn't very far from there.

These days, if it isn't too steamy, why don't you put baby in a stroller, pram or whatever and take a walk to St-Denis for the East and Southeast Asian places (St-Denis just south and just north of Jean-Talon) or across the railway viaduct (towards Loblaws) for the South Asian places?

    1. One place that delivers there is Village Grec. Their gyro is the best i've had in this town.

I beg to differ. Although good in a pinch, it is by far not the best. It actually was my fave a few years ago but recent visits have been more nay than yay. The meat has been undercooked (depending on how busy it is), fatty, gristly and the whole sandwich is poorly put together. Gone are its glory days I am afraid. Better bets are Marathon and Nostos, though they do not help the OP since neither deliver in her area.

        1. re: hungryann

Since I've never been to either Marathon or Nostos, my claim still stands. I've had a few duds there for sure, on busy nights when the turnaround was too quick for the meat to get nice and crispy. I wouldn't say there as been a decline though. I find it's still as good as when I started going there about a decade ago.

          1. re: SnackHappy

Well, it's been one too many duds for me; 5 years + , there were never any off nights and we used to order at least once a week. As you said in the other thread, I am not going to waste calories on something I consider subpar. To each his/her own!

            1. re: hungryann

I finally got around to visiting Nostos, mostly motivated by this thread, and I must say they make a damn good gyro. The meat was nice and crispy and very tasty. I wouldn't say it's head and shoulders above Village Grec. I think I might like the mix of meats at VG better and the VG sandwich is a bigger creature stuffed with more meat and tzatziki. What made a real difference for me though was the fries. Real homemade fries not the frozen food service stuff you get at most greek places. Nice moist sweet homemade fries, and no lettuce in the greek salad. I'll be going back for sure, but I won't stop visiting Village Grec.

              1. re: SnackHappy

Village Grec uses 3 different meats for their gyro, while Nostos uses 2 different meats. My preference? I like the Nostos gyro better, but I'll still go back to Village Grec for their gyro as they use 3 meats.

                1. re: BLM

So glad people are trying Nostos. I've been going for 5 years and it has yet to disappoint.
Snackhappy, I think we will have to agree to disagree :).
I can barely finish a Nostos gyro but I had 2 from VG (well, I would have been satiated after 1 1/2) and I like the crispier well done meat. VG has dropped in my gyro ranking since it has let me down several times.
                  My current gyro ranking is:
                  1. Nostos
                  2. Marathon
                  3. Village Grec, previously #2 (Laval location superior to Parc-Ex)

                  1. re: hungryann

I'll revisit Village Grec in Parc-Ex for their gyro soon, see if I notice any drop in quality(I would probably need multiple visits to be sure).

            2. re: SnackHappy

Can't say I've noticed any falling off in the standards at Village Grec. Greek friends who live nearby declare it the best they've had outside Greece. Have been meaning to visit Marathon and Nostos since hungryann's post of a while back. So much food, so little time...

        2. Hiya, have you checked out A la carte express? If you plug in your postal code they tell you which places deliver to your area. http://alce.dtsc.net/en It costs a few bucks for delivery, but is definitely better than nothing!

Other thoughts: a personal chef service that delivers fresh or frozen prepared meals can be an economical and healthy option and a boon for young families.

I know recently my friend who lives over at Clark & Mozart practically had to beg an Outremont pizzeria to deliver to her place, even though it's a short drive away. The resto ended up saying "OK, I'll do it this time, but don't call us again" - I mean, huh? They don't need the biz, I guess?

          Anyhow, good luck!

          1. Thanks for the recs, all. I'm going to take a mosey along Jean Talon and pick up some menus. I just haven't been able to bring myself to do it in this heat, with a small, hot person strapped to me. I enjoy Greek food so will give that one a go, too.

kpzoo - We tried to bribe a sushi place downtown to deliver to us once. We were desperate and offered them $50. No go. They said we'd need to order at least $100 worth of food. A lot of places I've called have, upon hearing my address, told me in a horrified voice that they CANNOT! deliver to me - and most of them have been close enough to get here by car in a few mins. I wondered the same thing you did - don't they need the business?

            1. re: montrealeater

Terrasse Lafayette definitely delivers here, as does Merveille du Vietnam - I get flyers from them all the time. But if you can find the time and energy to go for the walk, a walk along Jean-Talon west (from Loblaws to l'Acadie - not far) and along St-Denis from about Bélanger to Castelnau or Faillon - should reveal some places. Yes, I know, it has been terribly muggy - a family with a tiny baby has just moved into a ground-floor flat here and poor baby is fretting (and poor parents not getting much sleep). I'll remember to pick up delivery menus if I find any - I never order food in.

It is as if the railway between Le Plateau/Mile-End and here was the Berlin wall! I can get to that Outremont place by bicycle in no more than ten minutes.

            2. Montrealeater, have you had any luck in your search? I haven't received any flyers recently (from Vietnamese or South Asian restaurants) and have been a bit too busy with other stuff to go around jotting them down.

There is a very good small Vietnamese resto close to your house, on Jean-Talon west near St-Urbain (Nhu Y), but I don't think they deliver.

Look, they got a (good) review in Hour last week! Missed that.

Baby is little, still, but the park at the corner of Drolet and Mozart is a gem for small children, by the way. I remember when it was a vacant lot. To be foodie, you can eat something from JTM, Motta or the Asian places on St-Denis...

              1. re: lagatta

Hiya Lagatta. We have not had too much luck, due in part to our own sloth (it's SO humid here!). My boyfriend did go a-gathering along Jean Talon but most of them don't seem to deliver (a couple had delivery on their menus but when I called - weekday evenings - were not delivering). We tried Tabac (Pakistani/Indian), which is on Jean Talon x Waverly and it was very good, imo, but they were one of the places who said they'd deliver and actually don't seem to. My boyfriend spends only 1/3 of his time here in Montreal due to work but we intend to work our way through the few blocks of Jean Talon when he's here and can go pickup. I'm not housebound by any means but my life currently is not lending itself to casual excursions in the nabe.

Re: the Vietnamese place - is this the place directly opposite the fast food joint (Mike's, I think?) on Jean Talon x Clark? Google maps has it further west and, weirdly, I've never walked that specific block (I'm always going west or east and walk up Clark or Waverly. I've eaten at the place opposite Mike's a few times and it was perfectly OK, but that write-up you linked sounds unfamiliar (better) somehow. I'll definitely take a walk tomorrow and see if it *is* different because I love Vietnamese and that's so close picking it up won't be a problem.

Thanks for the park rec, too. I've mentioned this before but I'm not a native, so am unfamiliar with a lot of even local things in Montreal. Parc Mozart is almost right across from me so I've been hanging out there a lot but it's a no-dogs park and I have a dog so... :) At least all the old Italian dudes around here love her!

Lastly, did you see my post re: the sour cherries? I was interested to know what you thought. I checked out the tree thoroughly and it's in front of a property being rebuilt - the only people I see there are workmen. I'd love to get my mitts on those cherries but don't know how appropriate it would be to ask the construction workers if I could gank them. Visions of cherry pies dance in my head.

                1. re: montrealeater

That is odd about Tabaq, as they even have a sign on their place saying they deliver.

I'll make an effort to go by those Vietnamese places on St-Denis; I know at least one of them delivers as I get flyers from them but haven't received any in a while. I believe it is named "Trang An". By the way, Terrasse Lafayette definitely delivers up here; I get flyers from them all the time.

No, the place opposite Mikes (now dubbed "La Trattoria Mikes") looks big and rather ordinary - The restaurant that got a good write-up in "Hour" is about a (very short) block west of there and the entrance is so small that you might miss it walking past. Look for the "NHU Y" sign. It is definitely more interesting than your average Vietnamese brochetterie, and yes, it is extremely close to your house.

I don't know whether dogs are forbidden at the tiny park for children at the corner of Mozart and Drolet - I have definitely seen dogs there but that is no proof of anything.

No, I missed the sour cherries, because I thought it was a thread asking where one could buy them here, and I don't have a clue.

I'm sure the builders wouldn't mind at all, and the property owner is obviously not harvesting the cherries. I'd be very surprised indeed if you were to be arrested for swiping neglected cherries.
