There was an article in the paper this morning about a hot dog place called Tommy Snyder's on Jackson St. They said he steams the buns, and steams then grills the dogs. Has anyone tried them?

I've been a customer of Hot Dog Tommy's for years! Love him and his dogs. Little hole in the wall place, Tommy wears a hot dog hat, can't miss him. Love the Jersey Slaw Dog and his Potato Tornadoes. He has a website, not sure of it offhand.

I was there 2 years ago with the Star Ledger's S.W.A.T. Dog Team. Tommy is a great guy. The dogs are ok but I'm not crazy about their preparation. After steaming them, they're put on a roller grill. I would rather have them grilled on a real griddle or charcoal/gas grill which gives a better char and imparts more flavor. Roller grills are for movie theatres and 7-11's. The dogs are skinless. If I'm going out for a dog, I prefer one that has the snap of a natural casing. Here is my notes from when I went:
26) Hot Dog Tommy's, Jackson St. Cape May.
A small walkup stand in the beautiful town of Cape May. It seems that they do a good business as there was a fairly long line on a Sunday afternoon. Tommy's won a Coney for best personality. The guy was funny, spewing forth jokes and one liners the whole time we were there. Two different dogs were served. A five to a lb skinless all beef dog from Berks. This one was short and chubby rather than long and slim like the Syd's 5 to a lb. The other dog was a Berks skinless 10 to a lb beef and pork dog. Both dogs were steamed and then put on a roller grill. Not exactly my favorite way to prepare a dog. But the dogs came out better than I anticipated. The beef dog was solid, if unspectacular. An ordinary all beef dog. The beef/pork dog was tasty and above average. You can get these dogs with diced onions and pickles. There is a sign reading "Sorry, we do not have red onions or cooked onions. Dats North Jersey. So don't ask for them. We serve raw diced onions."
