Those are two of my favorites in the area, to which I'll add Sushi Zen, a great high-end Japanese on 44th just west of 6th.

How about Artisinal on Park between 32nd & 33rd? Cheese, glorious cheese!

oh, and what about the 2nd Ave Deli? Now located on 3rd & 33rd?

skip 2nd Ave Deli -- much, much overrated. Go to Sarges on 38/3rd. The best -- and is open 24hrs. Artisinal is a must, must. Dhjano is good too on 46th bet, 3rd and park.

Agree about Sarges and Artisanal. If you like sushi, you should try Sushi Sen-nin on East 33 between Park and Madison.

I wholeheartedly agree with the Sarge's recommendation. It's on 3rd, b/t 36th & 37th. The pastrami runs Katz's a *very* close second. Btw, though I'll miss the "grungy" atmospherics, they're in the midst of sprucing up the place. Happily, the wait staff remains very friendly and, in some instances, quite colorful.

Sichuan Gourmet on 39th between 5th and 6th. If you like chinese food this is one of the few places outside one of our chinatowns that serves the real thing. Avoid ordering anything you've ever gotten at regular chinese restaurants. Ordering orange chicken or beef with broccoli there should be a crime (altho they are on the menu for less adventurous types)

Barbes on 36th between Mad & 5th is a great french/ morroccan place with an excellent vibe. I also second (or third as it were) the recommendation for Sarges and Artisanal. I also read in todays NY Times that the Morgan Library on 36th & Madison has a formal dining room - aptly named The Morgan Dining Room which is supposed to be very good, but only open when the museum is open.

I just saw that little piece as well and was coming to look for this thread. The Morgan Dining Room looks beautiful, but I've not eaten there either. The cafe has quite good food as well.

Just to note that while The Morgan Dining Room serves lunch Tues.-Fri., and brunch on Sat. & Sun., dinner is served only on Friday.

Salute is a great italian spot. Fantastic freshly made pasta and great wine.
Butterfield 8 is also pretty good.. good for drinks too.

If you like Greek I suggest Ethos on 34th & 33rd on 3rd Avenue.

I have not been to Artisinal yet, but Cosette is the best restaurant we've found in the area so far. It's a tiny, French place, reasonably priced, with a great atmosphere. Very authentic French cuisine with a lot of attention to detail taken.
It's on 33rd between Lexington and 3rd Ave. It's a "sleeper" if you will...
