London—What good food places do you enjoy (some near Buckingham Palace area)? Recommend cafes, restaurants, etc.?

Could you please share some current dining recommendations for London? Primarily near the Buckingham Palace area, although I am certainly open to places that are further away as well.

A few years ago I was in London and ate at Ask (fabulous) and had lovely piles of Scottish Salmon in sandwiches at Harrods, and incredible Gelato at Morelli’s. Most of the rest of the food I found elsewhere was just...okay.

I am hoping you will share some of the places you enjoy going to.
Looking for mostly moderate/inexpensive ('some' can be more upscale) places. Cuisine/types--English, Eclectic/nouveau, Italian, some French, fish places (yummy). Cafes, good pubs, restaurants....
(Please no Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, steakhouses).

Greatly looking forward to hearing about the gems you’ve found, and enjoy returning to. Appreciate you taking the time to share.

  1. How about middle eastern? I always like Noura... http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/reviews/11039.html

    Or The Wolseley? http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/reviews/10741.html

And for dessert, try William Curley! http://www.timeout.com/london/restaur...

You don't mention a budget though so these might be a bit pricey? ASK is a pizza chain so is a bit more of a value...

    1. Shame you exclude Indian there is a very good Michelin starred one called Quilon in Buckingham Gate (in the Crowne Plaza). Good South Indian food.

      1. For your cafe choices, consider these places with good coffee:
Monmouth Coffee (branches in Borough Market and Covent Gardens)
Macona in Islington (also another branch in Hoxton Sq) - also get the lovely cheese cake
Foyles Cafe (Tottenham Court Road) - lovely atmosphere, bright airy and jazz in the background

BTW, someone mentioned Square Mile Coffee to me recently, is it any good?

If you're a serious tea drinker, head over to Postcard Teas (Mayfair) or TeaSmith (Spitalfields Market). Some stylistic differences between the 2 places, but carefully brewed stuff. Postcard Teas has a good selection of Pu-erh among other things - order one of their aged pu-erhs and you could spend a whole afternoon tasting how the flavour profile develops over 10 or more infusions. Teasmith currently has a diverse range of Taiwanese green oolongs - worth doing a horizontal tasting.

        1. re: limster

good catch on foyles cafe - but the bookstore itself is one of the pleasures of living in london. more pleasure than blackwell in oxford and heffers in cambridge and the cafe itself is just around the corner from the mathematics section. perfect taste.

to keep it on food, good sandwiches and coffee at the cafe.

        2. Kristainlondon is right about Noura - the one behind Buckingham Palace is very good.

If you want English food, Inn The Park, in St. James' Park, is pretty good. The building is a benign wooden wave sweeping above the pond. You can sit outside and watch the spies feeding the ducks.

There is also a sandwich shop up Quebec Place, parallel to St. James' Street, called 'Get The Foccacia.' I don't actually remember what the sandies are like, but you've got to love that name.

          1. Try Seafresh in Pimlico for understated and affordable seafood cafe.

            1. re: jessjaws

If you're going to go to Seafresh in Pimlico, about 50 yards away is the Rippon Cheese Shop on Upper Tatchbrook St. This must be the best cheese shop in London, not least because of the bowler hats they all wear.

The shop has thrived despite the opening of an ugly great Sainsbury's (opposite Seafresh) and the presence of another Tescos on Warwick Way.
