Sushi Gen - downhill?

Had lunch at Sushi Gen today, sat at the bar. Fair to bad, actually...I was very surprised.
I took a client, we ordered the standards (sushi): Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, Albacore, Spanish Mackerel, Salmon Roe, etc. I haven't been here in maybe 6 months, anyone else suffered the same experience?

  1. We went about 2 months ago for dinner and the fish was fresh and good. We ordered mostly sashimi though, not much sushi.

So what was wrong? Fish, rice?

    1. re: notmartha

Rice was fine, fish was "off". Salmon was mushy, yellowtail was bland. Tuna was decent, albacore & mackerel were "fishy". Cuts were very small, almost stringy & "chewy" (salmon, yellowtail, albacore)
I've eaten here many times, over 10+ years, was way off what I remember.

    2. not very specific...

      1. I've had some great meals at Sushi Gen, but I have also gone when they have been "off". Most of the time, they are "on."

My first experience with Sushi Gen was mediocre as well, but because of the effusive praise on this board I eventually gave it another shot several years later. In that time it has become my favorite sushi place for good fish at a fair price*

          * Fair price qualifier excludes sushi bar-- lunch specials only!

While never extraordinary I've had great meals at Sushi Gen. The last one, when I sat at a table for the first time, was about average on my scale of sushi rector ratings. Sushi bar it is...

          2. We were at GEN last week. Seated at the bar , everything was perfect as usual.

I seem to remember that you adore Sasabune. I'm coming to abhor that place. Had a meal there last week (remembering our discussion months back) on an expense account and had to keep myself from getting rambunctious. We spent a lot and had to pretend it was pleasurable. It is a very pale comparison to the old Sasabune.

Sushi Gen is considerably better, imho.

We normally have a very good experience sitting at the Sushi Bar in front of NOBI and having the Chef's Omakase. Haven't been for a while.

            2. I used to go to this place with my dad a long, long, long, long time ago. Back then it was good, but been there a couple of times during the past 2 years.....not so great. I think the place went downhill after they remodeled. Emphasis seems to be on quantity/speed over quality. I would not recommend this place.
