Chinese ZongZi - Rice Wrapped in Bamboo Leaves

Does anyone know where I can buy these in Manhattan to bring home? When I was in LA, some bakeries and Chinese beef jerky places would sell it, but I have no idea where to find it here. I like the ones with the soy sauce and pork inside (Shanghai style). Please help as I am having a major craving!

  1. I have never tried it but Shanghai Cafe on Mott sells it.

I've tried it at Shanghai Cafe and found it really lacking when compared to the May May version.

    2. The best ones were at May May bakery that closed down last year. But there's a lady on Grand Street between Mott and Elizabeth that sells them for a dollar each. She's a plump, middle-aged Chinese woman who's pretty friendly.

      1. How to pronounce zongzi? aka joong?

        1. Almost every Dim Sum Palor has it. They usually have one with chicken inside (Lo Mai Gai) band the Guo Jing Zhong which has pork fat, mushroom, mung beans (texture), the rice(of course), pork, and anything goes after that. I prefer the latter and going to get mine later. They also sell it at some Tofu shops like the one on Grand Street and Bowery (Northeast Corner). You should be seeing them being sold around CTowns today.

          1. There are several carts selling these in Chinatown, but they all tend to be very bland.

            Soy sauce required ?

            1. stick with LA. i found that there are none here that are actually good. they are all bland like another poster said, and skimpy on the filling. cheap -and not in a good way.

Guo Jing Zhong (Cantonese) is the most luxurious. Its wrapped in lotus leaf instead of bamboo leaf.
